Laughter is The Best Medicine
Laughter is The Best Medicine Many years ago, Norman Cousins was diagnosed as terminally ill. He was given six months to live. His chance for recovery was 1 in 500.He could see the worry, depression and anger in his life contributed to, and perhaps helped cause, his disease. He wondered, If illness can be caused by negativity, can wellness be created by positivity? He decided to make an experiment of himself. Laughter was one of the most positive activities he knew. He rented all the funny movies he could find Keaton, Chaplin, Fields, the Marx Brothers. (This was before VCRs, so he had to rent the actual films.) He read funny stories. He asked his friends to call him whenever they said, heard or did something funny. His pain was so great he could not sleep. Laughing for 10 solid minutes, he found, relieved the pain for several hours so he could sleep. He fully recovered from his illness and lived another 20 happy, healthy and productive years. (His journey is detailed in his book, Anatomy of an Illness.) He credi ts visualization, the love of his family and friends, and laughter for his recovery. Some people think laughter is a waste of time. It is a luxury, they say, a frivolity, something to indulge in only every so often.Nothing could be further from the truth. Laughter is essential to our equilibrium, to our well-being, to our aliveness. If were not well, laughter helps us get well; if we are well, laughter helps us stay that way.Since Cousins ground-breaking subjective work, scientific studies have shown that laughter has a curative effect on the body, the mind and the emotions. So, if you like laughter, consider it sound medical advice to indulge in it as often as you can. If you dont like laughter, then take your medicine laugh anyway.Use whatever makes you laugh movies, sitcoms, Monty Python, records, books, New Yorker cartoons, jokes, friends.Give yourself permission to laugh long and loud and out loud whenever anything strikes you as funny. The people around you may think youre s trange, but sooner or later theyll join in even if they dont know what youre laughing about. Some diseases may be contagious, but none is as contagious as the cure. . . laughter.By Peter McWilliams From Chicken Soup for the Surviving Soul

Essay on Law Enforcement Cameras as Invasion of Privacy
Law Enforcement Cameras as Invasion of Privacy It is a copy-book maxim that the state exists in order to protect its citizens and its law enforcement subdivision deals with the issue of protecting them from inner dangers, i.e. criminals that may harm them or their property. The methods, which can be used by police, however, are much more controversial issue. In many cases we may see that the law enforcement system exceeds the range of duties it is supposed to attend to. The usage of cameras spying on the citizens is one of such cases. Yes, it may in some cases make the work of police easier and more effective. But the citizen like me does not care about it. This citizen cares for the fact that the existence of these cameras makes it possible for the police or any other officials to follow his movements if somebody wishes so. He doesnââ¬â¢t have anything to hide, but doesnââ¬â¢t want to share his personal life with anybody ââ¬â so, what right do the officials have to invade his privacy? I repeat ââ¬â law enforcement exists to make my life as a citizen safer and not for the convenience of the police. It is up to me to decide whether I want to impart any information with them or not. It makes the law enforcement easier, all right; but what else can make it easier? To implant a GPS marker into the body of every citizen to make it easier to find him if need arises? To plant bugs into every personââ¬â¢s apartment to know what he talks about when he is at home? To place a telescreen in his living room, so that the Big Brother could watch him without effort? Where is the line after which the state exceeds the limits of its authority?

A Summary of the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx Essays
A Summary of the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx Karl Marx was an idealist. He observed the cruelties and injustices that the poor working class endured during the period of industrial revolution, and was inspired to write of a society in which no oppression existed for any class of people. Marx believed in a revolution that would end socialism and capitalism, and focus on communist principles. The Manifesto of the Communist Party, written by Karl Marx and edited by Frederick Engels, describes the goals of the communist party for ending exploitation of the working class and creating a society in which there is equality in society without social classes.1 The first part of the Manifesto is entitled the Bourgeois And Proletarians.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦But not only has the bourgeoisie forged the weapons that bring death to itself; it has called into existence the men who are to wield those weaponsââ¬âthe modern working-classââ¬âthe proletarians.â⬠2 Marx has introduced the solution to creating his equal society. He believes that the proletarians are capable of overthrowing the bourgeois because of their large population. Next Marx writes of the demeaning work of the waged-laborer. The worker becomes part of the machine, performing mind-numbing tasks for long periods of time. As the skills needed for the manual labor decrease, age and sex are of no distinctive validity. Skilled trades people and handicraftsmen are eventually forced to the level of the proletariat because they cannot compete with modern industry. Their talents are no longer needed because of the new methods of production. Despite their large numbers, the proletariats find difficulty in unifying against the bourgeois. The division of the laborers, geographically, keeps them from becoming a union of their own, and so, they are in competition with each other instead of against the bourgeoisie. Marx believes that with the increasing number of proletariats, their strength will grow, and they will find ways to better their situation. ââ¬Å"The real fruits of their battles lies, not in the immediate result, but in the ever expanding union of workers.â⬠3 Improved means of communication will prove to beShow MoreRelatedEssay on Summary of Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx2066 Words à |à 9 PagesSummary of Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx Introduction Karl Marx was born in 1818 into a middle-class, German family. Power and Agency in the Classroom
Summary The article, ââ¬ËBetwixt Safety and Shielding in The Academy: Confronting Institutional Gendered Racismââ¬â¢ by Cobb-Roberts presents an experience of cultural diversity of one African-American lecturer who teaches in a white student-dominated institution.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on Power and Agency in the Classroom specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More According to Cobb-Roberts (2012), the story is about a white student who complains of disapproval with the way the lecturer and his fellow students comment on racism. This student fails to meet the American-African lecturer. The student only meets her in the company of another lecturer. A policy of addressing the whole class in debates is devised. He later complains of harassment by his lecturer and fellow students. The situation pushes him to seek security. Cobb-Roberts (2012) asserts that the lecturer and her department refuse to approve a security guard in the classroom. However, the office of the senior academic administrator provides another African-American lecturer as an observer during his presentation. However, the white student does not trust the new African-American lecturer. He is only contented when a white lecturer is assigned. The whole story brings out the theme of cultural mistrust and racism in educational institutions. Significance and implication of the reading to education and power and agency in classrooms This reading is significant in education, power, and agency in classrooms since it explores how groupings of learners who have similar ideologies can intimidate students who uphold a contrary view. Based on power that comes with unity, teachers should discourage learners from personalized debates, especially on issues of racism and culture. If such debates are allowed, students with divergent views will feel intimidated by popular ideas. Such students fear expressing their conflicting views on such matters. Strengths and weaknesses The strength of power and agency in classroom in this story is portrayed by the way this white student is able to prompt the lecturer to change the policy of studentsââ¬â¢ response in class and the provision of an observer of his race by the senior administratorââ¬â¢s office to ensure his security.Advertising Looking for critical writing on education? Contribution to my understanding of multicultural education This story enriches my perspective on diversity. I have realized that race and gender can be a basis of discrimination. I have also realized that perceived or real racism can result in fear, role-conflict, and mistrust in schools. Summary Herrera, Holmes, and Kavimand anââ¬â¢s (2012) reading, ââ¬ËBringing Theory To Life: Strategies That Make Culturally Responsive Pedagogy a Reality in Diverse Secondary Classroomsââ¬â¢ paints a clear picture of cultural diversity in American schools. It also presents what it deems an appropriate teaching pedagogy. Herrera et al. (2012) confirm the wide variation in languages and culture among students and teachers in most of the contemporary American schools. Herrera et al. (2012) observe that teacher preparation for the current diverse situation of learners in American schools is inadequate. Based on this gap, the authors suggest the need to develop an inclusive curriculum that includes variations in language and culture since such a move will be important in upholding diversity in learning. Therefore, teacher preparation programs should equip them for a culturally diverse studentship in schools. Significance and implication of the reading to education and power and agency in classrooms This reading is i mportant in the development of education, power, and agency since it highlights the impact of both teachers and student curriculum on the management of diversity in schools. The reading emphasizes proper preparation on the side of teachers concerning the issue of student diversity. Development of a pedagogy that values and/or upholds diversity is also imperative. This strategy will unite student from diverse parts of the world while at the same time preparing them to work across the world.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on Power and Agency in the Classroom specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Strengths and weaknesses The strength of this reading is that it is founded on researches that indicate gaps and disparities that are witnessed between students and teachers. The reading is also anchored on preparing teachers on how to handle diversity before they begin teaching. The reading is recommendable since it s uggests a working plan of managing diversity. It suggests the development of a curriculum that is inclusive of cultural diversity. However, the weaknesses of this reading include its failure to substantiate the issue of diversity within the context of education. Suggestion to include language diversity in education may be cumbersome, owing to the multiple languages that are taught in schools. Contribution to my understanding of multicultural education The article is a revelation to me based on its unique presentation of the subject of multicultural education. It has expanded my understanding on how curriculum and teacher preparation can be used to address diversity in learning institutions. It has also made me appreciate the power of diversity in preparing learners to work in diverse cultures. Besides, it teaches me to appreciate the values of other cultures. Since no individual is an exact copy of another, it suffices to acknowledge peopleââ¬â¢s differences since each person has a distinct role to play in the lives of other people.
